Felt Mountain 1: Lovely Head by nyctopterus Felt Mountain 1: Lovely Head by nyctopterus
This is the first in a series of drawings inspired by Goldfrapp's Felt Mountain (which you can listen to here). Track No. 1, Lovely Head.

Now, normally I find quoting song lyrics in descriptions rather naff, but since it is rather the point:

It starts in my belly
Then up to my heart
Into my mouth I can't keep it shut
Do you recognize the smell
Is that how you tell
Us apart
I fool myself
To sleep and dream
Nobody's there
No-one but me
So cool
You're hardly there
Why cant this be killing you
Frankenstein would want your mind
Your lovely head
Your lovely head

If you haven't heard Felt Mountain, but like my art, you're really missing out. Although I made my first "crystaline" retro-futuristic drawings before I discovered Goldfrapp, it's an almost perfect stylistic counterpart to my work.

I once considered animating the entire album, but then I calculated that would take me more than a year full-time, and would also be forever in the copyright mire. So I procrastinated for a while (okay, nearly two years) -- and finally decided to do drawings instead.

This one's great. I adore Goldfrapp's music, especially Felt Mountain and Seventh Tree.

Man, what a fascinating gallery you've got! This reminds me a little of Remedios Varo.

i don't think there ar actually copyright issues if you are simply "inspired by" something. even titles can't really be copyrighted, that's why dozens of songs and books can have the same title by different authors, etc. besides, i bet that Goldfrapp would like your art too. this one kind of reminds me of a Remedios Varo painting.

Actually, I was talking about embedding the music in animations - and that is a copyright violation. One I would likely get away with, but still a pretty clear-cut one. This way's safe.

ahh, right, yeah, using the music would be sticky, but you could ask for permission. it's possible they would allow it for certain purposes, especially if credit is given, though if you make money you'd probably have a separate problem.... people use music for their home-made things on Youtube all the time, i'm not sure why that's not an issue. hm. i just don't know!

I don't think I'd get a reply if I fired off emails to Goldfrapp's record company - but I could be wrong. In the end I decided it was just too much work to do animations anyway.

Youtube's got huge copyright problems - it's mainly Google's maneuvering that's kept it up.

you might be surprised, especially if you attach a picture of your artwork, you have a really impressive and proffessional look, they might be interested in a collaboration. or they might totally ignore you, but you just never know.

Gosh ... :worship: This is so pretty and attractive, the stellar work and all... Damn, maybe you should enable this as a print, though I can't afford to buy it at once, :XD: still I'm sure some folk would appreciate to have one copy of this piece of Art :D ... and by the way, I love Goldfrapp, but my favourite one from the band is "Utopia" and there is another one called "Pumpkin", performed by Alison herself with Tricky, that is delightful to the maximum, but well of course you must know it. :)

Lovely head, but I must admit the first thing I thought of was a digestive tract (the stomach, more exactly). Now that I look at it, it can be a kidney too... :D You're free to hate me. I still love the tininess and shininess of it.

Well, I think you got it about right. It is meant to be a visceral - the first three lines of the song are digestive.

You're right, I didn't even pay much attention to the lyrics before. Did you do this on purpose then?

Yes, I am a conniving sort.

At first I was hesitant to transcribe the imagery in the lyrics so literally, but then I realised they're metaphors to start with - so I may as well.

I like this way of illustrating songs. You end up not knowing what's literal and what's metaphor anymore, and I think it leads to a more instinctive (visceral?:D) understanding of the message/idea. A lot like when you use music as well as lyrics to get the meaning of a song. It's not just your logic doing all the work.
(wow...does this even make sense?)

that's really amazing, that you've found the musical counterpart to your artwork and style. i like the look to the room/head, reminds me of a middle eastern mosaic.
